Want to Hear Insights into Electronics in Defence Sector?

Technology In the Defence

The Technology Industry Association (TIA), South Australia’s premier body representing the many innovative, technology-based organisations in South Australia will hold the fifth event in the series of “Industry Specific” events at 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on 29 October, 2014 at the University of Adelaide.

This event will concentrate on Defence, where they are collaborating with Adelaide Research & Innovation (ARI) to provide a panel discussion group including representatives from DSTO, Defence SA, and businesses in the supply chain.

Donald Kay, Vice President at Technology Industry Association, among other four speakers will deliver a speech titled “If Water and Electricity Don’t Mix, why is there so much electronics on boats” at this event. His speech will be about how innovation can be expensive and some of the prerequisites for innovative developments.

Everyone would like to think their work is new and novel and some of it should be.  But leading edge and innovation are expensive so it is best to confine them to those aspects that delivery the greatest returns.

In order to make products that truly extend the capability of the current technology requires a high engagement with the supply chain.  Donald will talk about the development of inductors that should have been straightforward but required bringing prototype manufacturing in house and working with suppliers to develop manufacturing processes.

Attendees will see how a humble home tile cutting saw facilitated the rapid development of some of the parts required.  They will also see an example of ‘flat pack’ engineering that IKEA might only dream of.
